Case Study - City of Monash
With their existing Water Use Management Strategy having been developed in 2003, Monash City Council engaged Business Shaper in redeveloping and updating the strategy to assist Council in adapting to developments since this time, such as more severe water shortages and restrictions as well as higher water prices.
The Water Use Management Strategy was developed to outline Monash Council’s approach to water management as well as answer a range of questions including:
- How does the council meet legislative requirements?
- How will the council meet community expectations and service level requirements?
- How can the council meet their internal objectives for water use and water quality?
Ensuring that the Council would be able meet the requirements of the ICLEI Water Program was also key priority of the strategy.
In developing the Strategy Business Shaper reviewed relevant legislation and regulations, best practice water management strategies for other councils and water use data for Council’s operations. Business Shaper interviewed external stakeholder to understand expectations, requirements and support available, as well as internal stakeholder to understand existing water management practices. Stakeholder workshop facilitation played a key part in finalising strategic direction.
Project Results
The project enabled Monash City Council to:
- Develop a Water Use Management Strategy meeting the requirements of the ICLEI Water Program
- Gain internal and external stakeholder buy-in on the strategy.
Following the completion of this project, Business Shaper and Monash City Council have worked together on another project.
"SBP (Business Shaper) provided valuable support throughout our project. SBP (Business Shaper) ensured the project progress was maintained and provided timely and accurate information. SBP (Business Shaper) understood our objectives and worked with us to engage a number of stakeholders to achieve the best outcome for our Water Use Management Strategy. Monash would consider engaging SBP (Business Shaper) for future projects and would recommend them to others."
Julie Harris, Monash City Council
