Case Study - VicRoads
In 2008 Business Shaper (as Sustainable Business Practices) was asked by VicRoads to review and assess their framework for calculating the greenhouse gas emissions of road construction projects (“the Framework”). This framework had recently been applied to the construction of the Mickleham Road Stage 2 duplication project.
The purpose of the project was to determine the framework’s suitability for application to other Victorian road construction projects and verify the greenhouse gas estimate for the Mickleham Road project.
Business Shaper took the following steps in assessing the framework:
- Review of the emission factors used to determine if they were likely to be appropriate for all Victorian road construction projects
- Reviewing all calculations used within the tool to ensure they were correct
- Assessing the usability of the document
- Recommending changes based on the above to improve the tool.
Business Shaper verified the emissions estimate for the Mickleham Road by:
- Reviewing all primary data used for the estimate
- Contacting persons involved in the development of the Framework and the road construction project to determine what processes and assumptions were used, and
- Considering differences in road projects which may affect the suitability of the Framework.
Project Results
As a result of the project Business Shaper made a number of recommendations to improve the accuracy of the Mickleham Road greenhouse gas emissions estimate and the suitability of the tool for other Victorian road construction projects.
